Meet Maxwell (usually known as Max, or one of his many nicknames: Maxi, Maxi-Paxi, Maxi-Moo, or Mr Moo) Maxwell has been with us since October 2024 and has made lovely progress during his time in foster care. He’s a Spanish Mastiff, around 60kg and roughly 35 inches at the shoulder, but firmly believes he’s an honorary lurcher and a lap dog at heart. At home, Max is calm, affectionate, and a dedicated cuddle enthusiast. He’s crate trained, travels well in the car, and is happiest snoozing on the sofa or leaning in for tummy rubs. He currently lives happily with one other dog and is generally social with dogs. He could live with another dog or as an only dog with enough human company. He is not cat friendly. Max is wonderful with children and lives with both a 10-month-old baby and a 15-year-old, whom he adores. He’s gentle, steady, and has even started alerting adults when the baby cries, a quiet guardian with a very soft heart. Lead walking is still a work in progress, as you’d expect from a big, strong, independent boy, but he’s making steady improvements with a gentle leader, patience, and high-value rewards. His recall is just beginning to click in secure fields, and while it’s early days, it’s a huge milestone for him. If you come armed with plenty of cheese, you’ll quickly become his favourite person. Max will need a secure garden with solid 6ft fencing, as he can be curious and occasionally tempted by “adventures”. True to his breed, he’s affectionate, stubborn in a charming way, independent, and deeply loyal once bonded. Max is looking for an experienced home that understands large breeds and appreciates a gentle giant who wants a sofa, a safe space to stretch his legs, and people to love.
